Gasconade County was founded in 1820, named after the Gasconade River, it has a unique history steeped with expeditionary frontiersmen and European culture.
Gasconade County (and the Gasconade River) received its name from French-speaking settlers of the area. They arrived from the Gascony region of southern France.
The area is known as the Missouri Rhineland. Because of its unique and beautiful setting, the area of the county seat Hermann, MO was designated an American Viticultural Area in 1983.
The Gasconade County Sheriff's Office holds a distinct historical significance in law enforcement. It is said William Clark (of Lewis and Clark fame) served as the sheriff of Gasconade County from 1824-1826.
